We start with TaylorMade and the launch of the new Qi4D series.

The Qi4D follows on from last season’s Qi35, which was an outstanding driver in its own right, but faced some stiff competition in the ultra-competitive driver market.

The Qi35 driver’s cause wasn’t aided by the fact that TaylorMade’s top two staffers, Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy, elected to stay with the previous year’s model, the Qi10.

The Qi35 fairway woods were something of a revelation.

TaylorMade’s fairway woods in recent years have been outstanding, and the Qi35 continued a trend that saw many players of all playing abilities being fitted for one of the Qi35 variants.

The Qi4D has already hit the ground running, with Scheffler and McIlroy being early adopters, along with the likes of Tommy Fleetwood and Nelly Korda, also making the switch.

Where the story behind the Qi10 and Qi35 focused on stability, the Qi4D is bringing the power back.

What’s Available

There are four driver models to choose from in the Qi4D range:

All heads are 460cc in size but come in slightly different packaging. The Qi4D LS model has a more compact look and a deeper face and will be better suited to players who generate the highest clubhead speeds.

The standard Qi4D head comes in the widest loft ranges, stretching from 8 to 12 degrees, supporting the fact that this model is likely to be best suited across the widest variety of players.

The Max and Max Lite are the two models that get closest to the magical 10k high-MOI threshold for maximum stability.

The Max offers three loft options of 9, 10, and 12.5 degrees and could crossover with the standard model in the mid handicap bracket, depending on spin and launch numbers.

The Max Lite offers lofts at 10.5 and 12 degrees. Ideal for the golfer who needs help maximising their carry distance.

The Max Lite is interesting because the head is partly constructed from 7075-grade aluminium, which is lighter than titanium, helping to create an overall lighter head that will help increase clubhead speed for players who need help the most.

All four models feature TaylorMade’s adjustable hosel technology to fine-tune launch and spin rates for maximum carry distances.

Understanding The Tech

The big news around the TaylorMade Qi4D series is making each driver head the fastest possible within the rules.

How TaylorMade has achieved this is through extensive re-modelling of each head to make it as aerodynamically efficient as possible. TaylorMade has been able to achieve this more aggressive profile thanks to extensive testing of how the airflow moves around each head and refining the design to reach the final shape.

This aerodynamic work is particularly good news when you get to the Max and Max Lite models.

Boasting high levels of MOI, the Max and Max Lite are designed to keep the ball straighter and not lose too much distance from off-centre strikes. These models boast the biggest footprint, which isn’t always good news for speed, but TaylorMade has worked its aerodynamic magic to ensure that both these drivers can deliver power.

Carbon Face Equals Speed

TaylorMade introduced its first-generation carbon face in 2022 with the launch of the Stealth driver.

The story for carbon is compelling. TaylorMade states that carbon is stronger and lighter than titanium, leading to faster ball speeds across the face.

The Qi4D series features the same 60-layer carbon face as the Qi35; however, TaylorMade has reworked the roll radius (roll is the curvature from the bottom of the face to the top) to tighten the spin characteristics for more predictable results.

What this means in practice is that when you strike the ball high on the face, the spin tends to be lower than when you hit it out the bottom of the face. Narrowing the spin window between top and bottom strikes creates more consistent distance and trajectory in the Qi4D.

The 60-layer carbon face is complemented by TaylorMade’s tried and tested Speed Pocket that continues to sit just behind the face, and helps to boost the trampoline effect of the face on the ball, leading to a bigger energy transfer and more ball speed.

Movable Weight Technology

TaylorMade pioneered movable weight technology when it introduced the R7 driver back in 2004.

The theory is simple.

Concentrating weight through different weight threads in strategically-located ports on the sole can help lead to creating draw shots or straightening out a slice if more weight is placed towards the heel.

The opposite is true if you suffer from pulls or hooks. Place the heavier weights in the toe ports, which will help the heel catch up with the toe, leading to straight shots.

The Qi4D features the updated Trajectory Adjustment System (TAS), which means we see:

  • Four weight ports for the standard Qi4D
  • Two weight ports positioned close to the face and rear of the head for the LS and Max
  • One weight port for the Max Lite model, situated close to the face.

Using the LS model as an example, you can place the heavier weight (fifteen grams) in the forward weight position to further reduce spin for the ultimate knuckleball flight.

If the spin is too low, move the weight into the back port to increase spin for a more predictable ball flight.

The final major tech story centres on the three shaft profiles TaylorMade has worked on with Mitsubishi Chemicals.

TaylorMade is relying on research that covers 11 million swings recorded over 20 years of driver and fairway wood production to create three shaft profiles for its new REAX Shaft system.

The REAX shaft profiles are low, mid, and high rotation. Rotation in TaylorMade speak is a player’s release characteristics, which affects the unloading of the shaft towards impact.

If it sounds confusing, TaylorMade has simplified the rotation categories using their staff players.

Collin Morikawa is fitted for a low rotation shaft, which means that Morikawa keeps his hands very passive through the downswing and hitting zone, almost holding the clubface off after impact.

Rory McIlroy fits into the mid rotation shaft, where there is a bit more hand activity through impact, and Charley Hull is an example of a high rotation shaft user, meaning she is active with her hands in the downswing and through impact to keep the clubface square.

TaylorMade believes the REAX shaft system means now there is a more pronounced “off the shelf” option for golfers than just shoving any random shaft in and selling the club.

The only small issue is that if you are not near an official TaylorMade fitting facility, you’ll need to potentially work out for yourself which shaft option you fall into.

In summary, you can sum up the four options in the Qi4D driver range as:

  • Qi4D - You don’t know your spin numbers, want adjustability, and tend to miss across the face rather than in one direction.
  • Qi4D Max - Your main frustration is shot dispersion, and you value fairways hit over chasing ball speed.
  • Qi4D LS - You consistently generate high clubhead speed and fight excessive spin or ballooning flight.
  • Qi4D Max Lite - You struggle to create speed, launch the ball low, or fade badly when you try to swing harder.

How the Qi4D Fairway Woods Move The Game On From Qi35

We have no doubt the Qi4D fairway wood range is well-positioned to build on the success of the Qi10 and Qi35 models.

Much like the drivers, the underlying technology carries over into the Qi4D fairways, with a clear focus on producing more speed and power. Aerodynamics once again play a central role, with TaylorMade refining head shaping to maximise clubhead speed and, in turn, ball speed.

Four models are available, mirroring the driver line-up:

  • Qi4D
  • Qi4D Max
  • Qi4D Tour
  • Qi4D Max Lite

The standard TaylorMade Qi4D Fairway Wood is likely to be the most widely played model, appealing to everyone from elite players through to mid-handicap golfers. Head sizes vary across the range: the Qi4D sits at 185cc, the Qi4D Tour Fairway Wood is the most compact at 175cc, while the Max and Max Lite feature the largest footprint at 200cc.

Both the standard and Max models make extensive use of carbon fibre in the crown to reduce weight, paired with a stainless steel face incorporating TaylorMade’s proven Inverted Cone Technology, designed to maintain strong ball speeds from centred strikes. For shots struck away from the middle, Twist Face technology is on hand to help straighten ball flight and reduce curvature.

TaylorMade has also refined the Speed Pocket design, improving ball speed generation and helping to manage spin on strikes low on the face.

Trajectory Adjustment System (TAS)

There are some subtle but important changes to the Trajectory Adjustment System in the Qi4D fairway woods compared to the Qi35.

The most notable update appears in the Tour model, which moves away from the sliding sole weight seen in the Qi10 and Qi35. Instead, it features three fixed weight ports: one positioned at the rear of the head, with additional ports in the heel and toe. This redesign has allowed TaylorMade to place a 60-gram tungsten pad behind the face, lowering the centre of gravity and making the Tour head more playable from a wider variety of lies.

This configuration will particularly appeal to players looking to fine-tune shot shape, launch and spin.

The remaining models feature a single weight port. In the standard Qi4D, the weight is positioned forward to help promote faster ball speeds, while the Max and Max Lite models locate the weight towards the rear of the head to increase overall stability and forgiveness.

TaylorMade provides three head options in the Qi4D hybrid range:

  • Qi4D Rescue
  • Qi4D Max Rescue
  • Qi4D Max Lite Rescue

Let’s start with the shared technologies across the range.

Each head features a carbon composite crown and ultra-lightweight stainless steel face.

Reducing weight across the head helps to improve clubhead speed while allowing TaylorMade’s engineers to place the saved weight strategically within the head.

The TAS System is in use, with the standard Rescue featuring an 8-gram weight placed just behind the face to improve ball speed. The Max (8-gram) and Max Lite (4-gram) are placed as far away from the face as possible to improve stability.

Because hybrids are designed to get the ball in the air and land softly, TaylorMade has ensured that the centre of gravity is optimally placed within each head to match the loft.

Finally, TaylorMade employs its well-established Speed Pocket Technology to manage the spin on low-struck shots and Twist Face technology to keep the ball on a straighter flight for off-centre hits.

Telling the hybrids apart, the standard Rescue model has an adjustable hosel, which allows the ability to dial in the ideal trajectory and shot shape.

The Max head has a bigger footprint compared to the standard Rescue, while the Max Lite employs lighter shafts and grips to get the ball in the air more easily.

Qi Max Irons: Helping Mid To High Handicap Players Get More From Their Game

TaylorMade has positioned the Qi Max and Max HL irons squarely at players who need as much help as they can in creating consistent golf shots.

Game improvements clubs have often been likened to shovels for their ungainly looks, which centre around wide toplines and even wider soles.

The Qi Max and Qi Max HL irons look like premium golf irons when placed in the golf bag. Their looks are designed with an aspirational sense, featuring a thinner topline, smaller blade length and reduced offset, which are often the trademarks of better players’ irons.

However, the Qi Max and Max HL still pack enough technology internally to make sure they are confidence-inspiring.

For starters, more consistent shot shape and ball speed performance are derived from TaylorMade’s patented face technology, which allows the face flex uniformly regardless of the strike location.

Secondly, TaylorMade employs its FLTD CG technology to move the centre of gravity consistently through each iron head to optimise spin and launch rates.

TaylorMade has put the focus on optimising each head to deliver consistent repeatable numbers with the starting point being forgiveness and maximum distance being the starting point.

Lastly, TaylorMade has worked on making the Qi Max and Qi Max HL heads sound more like a better player’s iron by employing a sound stabilisation bar and ECHO damper material in the sole of each iron, which, when added together, help reduce vibration and improve feel.

The difference between the Qi Max and Qi Max HL is that the Max HL offers weaker lofts, a larger face, and a wider sole to give it a more user-friendly profile behind the ball.

How The New TaylorMade Qi4D Release Works With Custom Fitting

On the surface, the 2026 TaylorMade Qi4D range looks like it is clearly defined towards different levels of players. The reality is slightly more complex. We see situations where players could sit between two models, leaving the question of which TaylorMade Qi4D model should I choose?

TaylorMade’s work with the REAX shafts is commendable and offers a more tailored feel for the “off-the-shelf” purchase.

The problem is that many golfers don’t understand their release patterns unless they are working on them specifically during lessons with their pros, or have access to a sophisticated launch monitor.

The TAS system and the adjustable hosels add layers of further tailoring, but again, how do you know you are getting the best results if you decide to play around with the configurations at the range.

Unlocking the true potential of what the Qi4D range can offer comes from custom-fitting.

Launch monitor data will provide the key numbers such as spin, launch, and ball speed.

Improvements can be sought in those areas by manipulation of the TAS system and the adjustable hosel. Improvements can also be measured by fitting the correct shaft to the chosen Qi4D head.

Having the right shaft profile can improve spin and launch rates, along with creating more clubhead speed. The right shaft is also crucial to shot dispersion, crucial for more consistent performance on the course.
